Most koi formulators borrow from aquaculture technology. This is why many koi foods have wheat, soybeans or other grains in them. It helps keep production costs down. Putting terrestrial (land dwelling) plants into koi food does put protein into the pellet, however the proteins from plants are not as well digested as the protein found in animals.
The protein in Kenzen koi food comes from herring meal, squid meal, and dried whole egg. These proteins are much more digestible and have the amino acid profile that koi need in order to grow well.
So the next time you look at the protein content on a bag of koi food, be sure to look a little deeper. The top 5 or so ingredients will tell you where the protein is coming from.
